Vatnsmyri Community

Reykjavik, Iceland

Vatnsmyri is a large (150 ha) area near the centre of Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland. The call for ideas was for the creation of a new compact, connected and diverse community with a strong sense of place in a decommissioned central airport. The understanding of the City's existing urban fabric and the particular environmental and heritage elements of the airport area had to be understood to integrate this vast area back into the city’s realm. The built form and public realm design ideas put forward included the enhancement and expansion of the University of Reykjavik facilities, the introduction of educational, research and knowledge based enterprises with significant housing, services and new residential forms, the celebration of the waterfront edge, diversity in public open spaces and links to the adjacent natural and built heritage areas such as the Oskjuhlid Hill and Downtown Reykjavik.
